6Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, "Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here?

7Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the Lord has given them?

8This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.

9After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them.

- P22

10The Lord’s anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath:

11‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more when they came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—

12not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’

13The Lord’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.

14"And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the Lord even more angry with Israel.

15If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction."

- P23

The tribes of Reuben and Gad, seeing the fertile lands of Jazer and Gilead,
request to settle there instead of crossing the Jordan. Moses rebukes them,
warning that their reluctance to cross the Jordan may discourage Israel. Hereminds them of God‘s past judgment over the nation and warns of conse-quences if they abandon their brethren. - P23

The tribes of Reuben and Gad notice that the land east of the Jordan isfertile, ideal for their large herds. Instead of waiting for Moses to providetheir allotment of land along with the rest of the tribes, they ask to stayeast of the river because they want the best possible land for their livestock.
- P24

This decision may seem practical and economical, but Moses points outthat their request could potentially discourage the Israelites from enteringthe promised land and going to war.  - P24

The tribes of Reuben and Gad are nothelping to carry out God‘s commands, and their actions could actually leadto Israel‘s destruction.  - P24

We can be blinded by our own ambition when weseek our own interests above the interests of others. We should be aware ofour motives and recognize when our ambition and selfish desires are leadingus and others astray - P24

Dear Jesus, thank you for calling us as a family and bringing us together toshare Your love with one another. Teach us to be slow to speak and quick tolisten to each other‘s concerns. In Your name, amen. - P25

The tribes of Reuben and Gad assure Moses that they will fight alongside Israeluntil the land is conquered and ask to be allowed to leave their families andlivestock in fortified cities. Moses agrees but warns them to keep their promiselest they face God‘s judgment. They pledge obedience, vowing to fulfill theirduty to the Lord and to Israel. - P27

Sometimes priorities can become mixed upOne pastor told me about achurch where serious arguments broke out due to disagreements over whatcolor the new carpet was to be. An ideal worship space is welcoming andaccommodates the needs of the people, but a hut with a dirt floor and tinroof that is full of worshipers accomplishes God‘s mission better than onethat is beautiful and ornate but empty. Whether we worship in a space withstained glass windows or no windows at all, the most important thing isthat we worship the Lord in spirit and in truth. - P29

25The Lord said to Moses,

26"You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured.

27Divide the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community.
- P158

28From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep.

29Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part.
- P158

God establishes a system of equitable distribution of war spoils, demonstrating His concern for both justice and community. . - P162

God’s economy differs from worldly systems, and this mindful distribution between warriors and community members reveals God’s heart for unity and shared blessing. His system ensures that everyone’s needs are met while acknowledging different roles and contributions. This foreshadows Scripture’s teachings about how the body of Christ, the church, functions. - P162

We, as one body, share our blessings together. - P162

We sacrifice for each other. We support each other. We use our individual gifts for the good of one another. We live not for our personal gain but to glorify Christ and build up the members of His community - P162

The recognition that "not one is missing" (v. 49) among the Israelites afterthe battle leads to a response of grateful generosity. This miraculous outcome proves that their success is not due tis not due to their own efforts but is evidenceof God‘s care for His people.  - P162

The gold brought to the tabernacle becomes areminder for future generations of God‘s faithfulness. God shows His mercyand faithfulness to us in different ways.
No two lives are the same and weare given different blessings, though always from the same God.  - P162

Since weknow that God cares for each of His children, let us be attentive to the waysthat He shows His faithfulness and love in our individual lives. - P162

Lord, thank you for the promise of Your presence in this life and in the life to come. - P162

Thank you for the many ways You thoughtfully care for me. - P162

In response, let my giving flow from a heart touched by Your grace. - P162

14Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.

15"Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them.

16"They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people.

17Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,

18but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

- P154

God, through Moses, commanded that the captured Midianites be put to death. However, the soldiers did not listen and instead kept alive those they wanted to. Yet we see in Numbers 25 that the Midianites enticed the Israelites to rebel against God so that His wrath would fall on them. God commanded the execution of the Midianites in order to protect the Israelites from idolatrous temptations. - P156

As believers in Christ, we face temptations from our sin that tries to entice us to disobey God. If we make peace with it, it will take deep root within our hearts. It must be completely uprooted so it does not take hold of us. - P156

But we do not fight sin alone; God gives us the strength to overcome it. - P156

God commands the Israelites to purify themselves and their captives before re-entering the camp. Moses emphasizes that both people and objects must undergo purification to be fit for God’s presence. This is a somber reminder that humanity carrying the effects of sin cannot enter in the presence of God’s holiness and needs cleansing from sin’s defilement. - P156

We must remember that God is both holy and gracious. - P156

God’s requirement for purification reminds us that, on our own, we cannot approach Him. - P156

We must first be cleansed. And in Christ, the ultimate purification has been accomplished for us. Jesus became the perfect priest and sacrifice, offering Himself to cleanse us from our sins once and for all and usher us into the presence of a holy God. - P156

Father, You paid a great price for my cleansing; I want to honor this sacrifice by uprooting sin from my life. - P157

Search me and know my heart. Make me aware of the sin I still harbor and remind me that You give me the grace to fight it. In Jesus’ name, amen. - P157

God instructs Moses and Eleazar on how to divide the spoils of war. It is to bedistributed equally between the soldiers and the rest of the community, witha portion set aside for the Levites. The soldiers offer a portion of their shareto God for atonement. Their offering is brought into the tent of meeting as amemorial before God. - P159

"When a man makes a vow to the LORD or takes an oath to obligate himself by apledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said." - Numbers30:2 - P163
