1The daughters of Zelophehad ...

1The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward

2and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said,

3"Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. - P118

4Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives."

5So Moses brought their case before the Lord,

6and the Lord said to him,

7"What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.

8"Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter.

9If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers.

10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.

11If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’"

Preparations are underway as the Israelites ready themselves to enter Canaan. The land is to be divided among the tribes and clans of Israel, but since property is normally passed from father to son, the name of the sonless and deceased Zelophehad will be forgotten. For this reason, Zelophehad’s daughters appeal to the leaders of Israel, and Moses brings their case before the Lord. - P120

God tells Moses that the daughters are right and that they should be given property as an inheritance. - P120

We see the fruit of coming boldly before God’s throne of grace, asking expectantly and in faith. - P120

Often such requests open the door for God’s blessings to flow not only into our lives but also into the lives of others. - P120

There is a deeper truth in this story of the daughters of Zelophehad. Remember, the previous generation of Israelites died in the wilderness because of their lack of faith. - P120

The land of Canaan is yet to be conquered, but the daughters of Zelophehad, as the new generation, make a bold request about their future that leads to further rules about inheritance for those who do not have sons or any children at all. - P120

The names of Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah, and Tirzah should be remembered because the faith of these ladies serve as an inspiration for us today. - P120

Bold faith can bring vision into reality and greater blessings to those in our community. - P120

Have you ever felt intimidated to approach the Lord with one of yourneeds or desires? If you are like me, you may have erroneously thought thatyour requests do not matter in God‘s great plan or that the Lord will notchange any circumstance because of your prayers.  - P121

However, Scripture tellsus that God wants us to come to Him with our requests, and He delightsin answering the prayers of His children. Philippians 4:6 tells us, "Do notbe anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God," and Mark 11:24 states,
"Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you havereceived it, and it will be yours."

There are various examples in the Bible of God hearing the prayers of Hispeople and, in His great wisdom, allowing those prayers to change thesituation. We see one such example in Exodus 32. The Lord is angeredby the Israelites‘ disobedience and says He will destroy them, but Mosesintercedes, pleading for God to show mercy and compassion, and the Lorddecides to spare the Israelites.  - P121

Likewise, in Numbers 27, five daughtersapproach Moses to ask for their father‘s inheritance, and God decides togrant request, even though this is not included in inheritance law atthe time. May these examples be an encouragement to approach the Lordwith all of your needs and requests, filled with confidence and trusting that His promisestheirforyouare
"Yes" and "Amen" (2 Cor. 1:20).

God instructs Moses to ascend to a mountain in the Abarim Range, wherehe will view the promised land before dying, as he will not enter it.  - P123

He commands Moses to appoint Joshua as his successor. Moses obeys and lays hishands on Joshua to transfer leadership in front of Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly. - P123

Being selfless is not something that comes naturally, at least for me. It isa constant struggle to think of others before myself and to put the needsof those around me before my own. My nature seems to constantly resortto selfishness. Oftentimes, without realizing it, I find myself focusing onhow others can serve me instead of how I can serve them. This is not theattitude that the Lord asks of us - P125

Philippians 2:3-4 instructs, "Do nothingout of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value othersabove yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to theinterests of the others."
We see a poignant example of this kind of selflessness in Numbers 27:12-23. Earlier in this book, the Lord informed Moses that, because of hisdisobedience, he would not be leading the people into the promised land.
Moses could have been bitter and angry about this. However, because ofhis love for the Lord, he chose instead to respond with selflessness.  - P125

Moses‘sconcern was for those under his care. He asked the Lord to appoint anotherleader for them so that they would not be like sheep without a shepherd.
This showed that Moses‘s heart was in the right place before the Lord. Hewas thinking of the well-being of others instead of his own gain.  - P125

When ourdesire is to bless others, we not only honor the Lord but also point otherstoward Him by being a representation of His selflessness, goodness, andsteadfast love - P125

53"The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.

54To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those listed.

62All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000. They were not counted along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance among them. - P115

64Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai.

65For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

God assigns the Israelites’ inheritance based on the size of each tribe and clan: larger groups receive more land and smaller groups less, with the inheritance determined by lot. This process reflects God’s order and justice as well as His thoughtfulness and care for both larger and smaller groups. - P116

The land, which is a gift from God, must be preserved by each tribe as an inheritance for future generations. This serves as a lasting testament to God’s faithfulness, reminding even those who did not witness the exodus or the conquest of the promised land of His enduring goodness. - P116

Where we may easily fail to remember His goodness, God helps us rediscover Him through stories of His faithfulness in the lives of generations of believers. - P116

While the rest of the Israelites are counted for the conquest and distribution of the promised land, the Levites are counted for a different purpose. The Levite men are counted from the age of one because they are not to receive an allotment of land. Instead, they are to serve in the house of the Lord, faithfully mediating between Him and His people according to His instructions for worship. - P116

The second census of the new generation of Israelites concludes with the note that none of those counted in the first census are included in the second, except for Joshua and Caleb, who continued to trust God when those around them rebelled against Him. This serves as a reminder that while disobedience cuts us off from God’s blessings, obedience ushers us into them. - P116

Lord, I thank You for all that I have received from You. You have never given too little; You always provided exactly what I needed to faithfully carry out the mission You gave me. - P117

The daughters of Zelophehad, who have no brothers, petition Moses for aninheritance in their father‘s name. God instructs Moses to grant their request,
establishing a precedent for women‘s inheritance rights in Israel.  - P119

The law stipulates that if a man dies without sons, his inheritance can pass to hisdaughters, brothers, or closest relatives. - P119

These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.

8The son of Pallu was Eliab,

9and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord.

10The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign.

11The line of Korah, however, did not die out.

12The descendants of Simeon by their clans were: through Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan; through Jamin, the Jaminite clan; through Jakin, the Jakinite clan;

13through Zerah, the Zerahite clan; through Shaul, the Shaulite clan.

After the plague, God commands a second census to be conducted on the plains of Moab. Like the first census in the Desert of Sinai, it counts all Israelite men aged twenty and older who are able to serve in the army. However, this census places greater emphasis on organizing the families of the Israelites to prepare for the distribution of the land after the conquest of Canaan. This marks the beginning of a new era of hope, as a new generation rises to take the place of the former. - P112

Following Aaron’s death, Eleazar takes over his father’s role in overseeing the second census. Despite the Israelites’ sin, God remains faithful, preparing and organizing them for the challenges and victories ahead. - P112

The Israelite men are counted according to their clans and families. The book of Numbers lists the clans of each tribe and their total numbers. Some tribes grew while others shrank compared to the first census. Yet, the total number of fighting men remains above six hundred thousand (see Num. 1:46). - P112

Considering their forty years in the wilderness, this is an awe-inspiring testament to God’s miraculous provision, guidance, and protection. - P112

However, not all tribes experience the same blessings. The decline of the tribe of Simeon likely reflects the consequences of their actions at Baal Peor (Num. 25:9). This reminds us that although God continually shows His faithfulness to us, this is never an excuse to persist in sin.
