Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—became insolent

2and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council.

3They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?"

5Then he said to Korah and all his followers: "In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses he will cause to come near him.

10He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.

11It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?" - P145

The leaders God calls and appoints are essential for the fulfillment of His will. Unlike worldly leaders, who battle one another for position and power, God chooses and places whom He wills. Those He calls to positions of leadership in the church He also equips. - P146

By accusing Moses and Aaron of setting themselves above others, Korah reveals not only his ignorance of the sovereign call of God but his own lust for a position for which God has neither called nor equipped him. - P146

Conflicts with leadership are not uncommon, even in the church. However, instead of the example of Korah, we would be wise to follow that of David, who refused to usurp King Saul’s throne and instead entrusted his case to God’s justice.

How we respond to those who question our calling as God’s servants reflects our spiritual maturity. - P146

Moses responds to the challenge of Korah in humility and prayer. He is willing to stand with Korah before the Lord, allowing God to validate the one He chose as Israel’s leader. He rebukes Korah and the Levites who follow him, reminding them that their calling and service among the people is no small thing. - P146

Moses provides us with a great example of godly leadership. He is not afraid to present himself before the Lord to be tested and affirmed as Israel’s leader. - P146

Neither is he afraid to rebuke Korah and remind him that his own calling is itself vital to the congregation of Israel. - P146

Lord God, enable me to recognize and rejoice in my calling and place in the body of Christ. Not only that, but may I support and encourage others in the ministries that You have appointed for them. In Jesus’ name, amen. - P146

Moses tells Korah that he and his followers are to appear before the Lord withcensers and incense. God warns of the judgment to fall on the rebels andtells the people to move away from them. The earth swallows Korah and hisfollowers and fire consumes those who are offering incense. - P149

Proverbs 16:18 warns us that pride goes before destruction and a haughtyspirit before a fall. Being prideful is the opposite of what the Lord calls us to,
which is having a heart of humility and an attitude of servanthood. Whenwe are prideful, we think of ourselves as better than others and put the em-phasis on our own importance. God‘s Word commands the exact opposite:

"Therefore, as God‘s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselveswith compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" (Col. 3:12).
In today‘s passage, we see that the Lord dealt severely with those who wentagainst Moses‘s leadership which God appointed. Those who rebelled didso out of selfish ambition, filled with pride and arrogance. Their fate is apoignant warning that God will swiftly deal with those who try to opposeHis will with justice and righteous vengeance.

I am embarrassed to admit that there have been several times in my lifewhen I have acted out of selfish ambition instead of following God‘s leading. This was usually because I foolishly thought that I knew best andcould handle the situation myself. These false beliefs, of course, always ledto failure and defeat.  - P153

Our selfish pride will never lead to God‘s blessings,
only to our own destruction. James 4:10 reminds us that when we humbleourselves before the Lord, He lifts us up.  - P153

"Humility is the fear of the LORD;its wages are riches and honor and life" (Prov. 22:4). - P153

 하나님께 우리가 원하는 것을 구하는 자체가 잘못된 것은 아닙니다. 다만 옳지 않은 것을 구하지 않도록 해야 합니다. 주님께서는 분명히 구하라고 하셨습니다. 그러나 구하는 내용이 바로 세워져 있어야 합니다. 구하는 과정을 통해 주님이 어떤 분인지 알아야 합니다.  - P139

AtMount Sinai, God‘s Law given through Moses makes breaking the Sabbatha sin punishable by death. This Sabbath-breaker is effectively spurning Godand the community of Israel as a whole. This is why all the congregationis commanded to participate in his execution by stoning.  - P142

When we ignoreblatant sin in our churches, we open the door to moral compromise that.
inevitably corrupts others and undercuts our witness as God‘s people. Thisis why God reminds His people in this passage to refrain from chasing thewrong desires of their hearts and instead be consecrated to Him. - P142

Dear Jesus, thank you for setting us apart to become children of God. Helpus foster a heart that desires and takes pleasure in obeying the Father‘scommands as You did. In Your name, amen. - P143

Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and On lead a rebellion against Moses and Aaron,
challenging their authority and accusing them of exalting themselves overthe assembly.  - P145

Moses warns them of the consequences of challenging God‘schosen leaders. He reminds them that their complaint is ultimately againstGod, not just Aaron. - P145

There have been numerous times in my life when I have felt wrongly ac-cused, unfairly judged, or unjustly treated. In circumstances like these, Ihave been tempted to fight back, defend myself, and convince others of myinnocence. However, when we look at God‘s Word, taking matters into ourown hands is not the response that He asks of us.

Romans 12:17-19 states, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. . . . Do nottake revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God‘s wrath, for it is writ-ten: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,‘ says the Lord." These verses offer clearinstructions that we are to leave vengeance in God‘s hands. When we try torepay others for their wrongs, not only do we make room for our own sinfulintentions to get in the way, but we are also telling God that we do not trustHim to handle the situation with His infinite wisdom and righteousness.

Numbers 16:4, after hearing Korah‘s accusations against him, insteadof defending himself or retaliating, Moses immediately falls facedown andsubmits his case to the Lord. Moses knew that the Lord‘s will would prevailno matter what forces came against him.  - P147

"On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, givehim something to drink."" Our job is not to decide what punishment othersdeserve, it is to love others and to submit to God‘s will with humility andtrust, knowing that He is just. - P147

24and if this is done unintentionally without the community being aware of it, then the whole community is to offer a young bull for a burnt offering as an aroma pleasing to the Lord, along with its prescribed grain offering and drink offering, and a male goat for a sin offering.

25The priest is to make atonement for the whole Israelite community, and they will be forgiven, for it was not intentional and they have presented to the Lord for their wrong a food offering and a sin offering.

26The whole Israelite community and the foreigners residing among them will be forgiven, because all the people were involved in the unintentional wrong.

We often think of sin as something that applies only to the individual and only when it is intentional. But God, being perfectly righteous, holds us accountable for all sin because any sin falls short of the glory of God. - P136

For the Israelites, these sins included improper worship practices due to ignorance or accidentally incurring ceremonial uncleanness. Everyone is tied to a community, which means individual sins also concern the community. This is why God provides a way for the community to confess and seek forgiveness together. - P136

Even as the church today, we fall into collective sin when we fail to uphold justice and mercy in our society. - P136

God commands us to confess not only our personal sins but also the sins of our community. - P136

When someone wrongs the community, it is easy to ostracize them immediately, but God calls His people to offer opportunities for restoration andreconciliation. This protection extends even to foreigners, as all people areequal before God.  - P136

However, this grace does not excuse blatant sin. Godmakes it clear that those who reject and defy His laws will ultimately becut off from the community.  - P136

A person cannot enjoy the privileges of acommunity without respecting the laws and authority that govern it. Likewise, being a God-fearing community means living under God‘s rule andfollowing His commands.  - P136

The church is a place of grace, but this grace is
never an endorsement of sin. - P136

Dear God, thank you for the community that is the church. You have called me to this body of Christ, to love and care for my fellow brothers and sisters. - P136

Give me the courage and humility to allow them to hold me accountable in Your grace. In Jesus’ name, amen. - P136
