얼마 전 가까운 친구가 내게 한 말이 생각난다.

"나는 내가 받아온 교육과정 중에 내게 상처가 되었던 것이 너무도 많았어. 그래서 그걸 내 딸에게는 서둘러 시키고 싶지 않을뿐더러, 가능하다면 다른 방법을 강구해주고 싶은데, 왜 다른 부모들은 경쟁적으로 자기 아이들에게 같은 것을 더 일찍 시키지 못해 안달일까??

그때 나는 이렇게 말했던 것 같다.

"인간이 자신에게 마이너스였던 것을 마이너스로 느끼는 것은 쉬운 일이야. 마이너스가 가져다주는 항시적인 불만과 초조를 표출하는 것도 쉬운 일이야. 하지만, 그 마이너스를 플러스로 바꾸는 데에는 <깨달음>이 필요한 것 같아. 이 깨달음을 얻고 구체적인 대안을 찾기내기 위해서 무진장한 시간과 집중적인 에너지를 소모해야만 하는 거지. 그러니까 자신에게 해로웠던 것을 자식에게 그대로 하지 않는 사람들은 강한 사람들이야. 대부분의 사람들은 쉬운 데서 머무르거든. 그리고 자신들이 그곳에 머물며 불만과 초조를 표출하는 것 자체가 마이너스를 더 깊게 한다는 것을 깨닫지 못하거든. "

" 음악을 연주한다는 건, 정말 멋진 일이다. 평범한 우리들에게는 살아가며 천재를 만나 대화를 

나눌 기회가 거의 없지만, 혹여 아인슈타인이나 프로이드를 만난다 해도 그들의 <업적>에 대해 쌍방의 대활르 나눈다는 것은 거의 불가능하겠지만, 음악에서만큼은 가능하다. 이를테면, 모차르트를 연주할 때 모차르트는 연주자에게 온다. “아이고, 그렇게밖에 못하십니까?” 한심하다는 듯 연주자의 등을 탁 치며 특유의 익살스런 미소를 짓고 사라질지언정, 말을 걸어온다. 천재 피카소의 작품을 <완료형>으로서 미술관에서 대할 때와는 다른 감동이다. 나만의 마음과 감각을 통해 <현재형>으로 천재와 그의 예술을 알현하는 감동이 있는 것이다. "

삶에 곁눈질은 필수다.

자신이 없어서 그런가 보다.  

아이들을 낳았고, 이 어린 것들을 어떻게 건사해야 하는지 훈육은 어떻게 해야 하는지,, 내가 부모님께 받은 것이 본능적으로 나오면 좋겠지만 그렇지는 못하다. 특별히 불행한 유년이어서라기 보다 내또래는 대체로 비슷할 거라고 생각한다. 먹고 살기 바쁜 부모님이시라 극진한 보살핌으로 자라지 않았다. 시대는 바뀌었고, 다른 방법이 필요하다는 생각에 육아서를 찾아 읽지만, 책 하나 읽었다고 아이를 다루는 방식이 크게 나아지지 않으며, 읽는 순간 반짝할 뿐이다.

이 책은 특히 맨 마지막 글인 한연엽 씨의 글은 소설을 읽는 것같았다. 이렇게 기구할 수가. 여성으로써 불행할 수가....

살고 있는 동네

이 동네에서, 아니 살고 있는 집에서 이사를 가고 싶어 했던 나는
마을버스 세 정거장 가면 당도하는 새로 생긴 구립 도서관 때문에 이 동네가 파라다이스처럼 보이기 시작했다.
오늘은 어쩐 일로 애들 아빠까지 오셔서
지금은 애들만 데리고 밖으로 나가 주셔서
혼자 도서관에서 책을 보는 호사를 백만년만에 누린다. 지금 바로 지금.
