Leaders and thinkers weigh in on classics that have shaped contemporary religious thought

If you want to be changed, read a good book. Or so said A. W. Tozer: "The things you read will fashion you by slowly conditioning your mind." Of the millions of books published this century, only a few hundred have shaped people in extraordinary ways. Here are some of those—100 books that had a significant effect on Christians this century.

Christianity Today asked more than 100 of its contributors and church leaders to nominate the ten best religious books of the twentieth century. By best books, we meant those that not only were important when first published, but also have enduring significance for the Christian faith and church. We have included books which do not always prompt agreement, but which are important for evangelical Christians to read and contend with. A few "period" pieces also made the list of 90.

By far, C. S. Lewis was the most popular author and Mere Christianity the book nominated most often. Indeed, we could have included even more Lewis works, but finally we had to say: "Enough is enough; give some other authors a chance."

바울은 예수님의 추종자다

바울과 예수

자유주의 신학자들은 바울은 "기독교의 창시자"(W. Wrede 이래)라고 부른다. 예수님과 바울의 메시지가 너무 다
르기 때문이다. 예수님은 하나님의 나라를 선포하였으나, 바울은 십자가와 부활을 선포하였다. 그러나 복음주의 
신학자들은 바울은 "예수님의 추종자"라고 부른다. 바울과 예수님의 가르침은 차이가 나면서도 본질적으로 일치하
기 때문이다. 자유주의 신학자들의 엄청난 화력에 맞서 웬함(David Wenham) 박사가 패트리어트 미사일을 발사했
다.(그는 브루스 교수(Frederick Bruce)의 제자며 김세윤 박사의 동지이다.) 그는 [바울과 예수]에서 바울을 연대기
적으로(회심이전, 회심, 회심이후) 추적하여 사도행전과 바울서신(갈라디아서, 데살로니가 전후서, 고린도전서)
에 나타난 바울의 행적은 다르지 않고 서로를 보완해 준다고 주장하였다. 또한 사도행전과 바울서신에 나타난 바
울과 예수님의 가르침은 다른 증인(누가와 바울)에 의한 하나의 복음이라고 주장하였다. 나는 신학대학에서 바울
은 기독교의 창시자라고 배웠다. 그러나 웬함 박사의 [바울:예수의 추종자인가 기독교의 창시자인가?]와 [바울과 
예수]를 읽고 바울은 예수님의 추종자라고 단언하게 되었다. 자유주의 신학자들은 바울은 예수님의 가르침 중에
서 고작 두 절(고전 7:10,9:14)만 인용하고 있다고 지적했으나, 웬함 박사는 바울은 다른 상황에서 예수님의 가르
침을 직접 인용하지 않고 allusions(박문재님은 간접 인용(52쪽), 이한수님은 암시(248쪽)로 번역하였다.)하였다고
증명해 주었기 때문이다.

소설 어거스틴

기도의 놀라운 능력 - 어거스틴을 변화시킨
헨리 코레이 지음, 이상길 옮김 / 카리스월드 / 2002년 12월

하나의 인간이 탄생하기까지 가정환경은 절대적이었다. 어거스틴의 아버지 파트리키우스는 방탕한 생활을 했다. 어거스틴이 아버지를 답습한 건 어쩌면 당연한 일인지도 모른다. 그러나 어거스틴에게는 어머니 모니카가 있었다. 잠자리를 눈물로 적신 어머니의 기도는 결국 아들을 변화시켰다. 기도의 자식은 결코 망하지 않는다는 부제가 수긍이 간다. 부모로서 무거운 책임감을 느낀다.

뛰어난 학자로 성장하기까지 주변의 도움이 컸다. 타가스테의 원로원 의원 로마니아누스는 어거스틴의 후원자였다. 고향 친구 알리피우스 학교 친구 네브리디우스와 호노라투스는 단짝이었다. 동거녀 멜라니는 어거스틴의 장래를 위해 수도원으로 떠났다. 그러나 어거스틴을 최고의 수사학자로 만든 분은 하나님이셨다. 하나님은 교회를 수호하기 위해 어거스틴에게 지적 순례 여행을 허락하셨다.  

위대한 감독이 출현하기까지 멘토의 보살핌이 있었다. 어거스틴은 마니교에 심취했었다. 그러나 밀라노의 감독 암부로우스가 이단에서 헤어 나오도록 도왔다. 어거스틴은 결국 암부로우스에게 세례를 받는다. 히포의 감독 발레리우스는 감독 어거스틴을 만든 장본인이다. 발레리우스는 어거스틴에게 성직을 안수하였고 후임 감독으로 추천하였고 은퇴 후에는 중보적 기도를 빼놓지 않았다.

탁월한 작가로 알려지기까지 멘토리의 뒷받침이 있었다. 어거스틴은 마니교와 도나티스트를 물리치고 펠라기우스와 힘겨운 싸움을 계속하고 있었다. 그러나 어거스틴에게는 헤라클리우스가 있었다. 헤라클리우스는 극도로 악화된 어거스틴의 건강을 챙겨 주었고 산더미처럼 쌓여있는 잡무를 대신 처리해 주었다. 16 년 간의 고된 작업 끝에 나온 [하나님의 도성]은 헤라클리우스의 일조덕분이었다.

비록 저자를 몰라도 오자가 나와도 소설의 감동을 막을 수 없다.

폭풍의 눈 루터

소설 마르틴 루터 1
레그 그랜트 지음 / 홍성사 / 2004년 6월

이 소설에는 실존인물과 가상인물이 번갈아 가며 등장한다. 실존인물은 소설에 역사적인 사실성을 부여한다. 1505년 7월 2일 폭풍 속을 걷던 루터(21세)가 번개를 맞고 쓰러진다. 루터는 진로를 놓고 고민하고 있었다. 루터는 폭풍 속에서 하나님의 음성을 듣고 수사가 되겠다고 서원한다. 이 날의 폭풍이 유럽을 뒤흔들 태풍이 될 줄이야... 이제 가상인물이 등장한다. 가상인물은 역사에 소설적인 상상력을 불어넣는다. 유대인 의사 스클라가 세 사람을 뒤쫓고 있다. 쫓기는 자와 쫓는 자의 시소게임이 처절하다. 미친 듯이 달려드는 추적자 앞에 집시 모녀는 처참하게 살해되고 마르타는 점성학 책을 갖고 무사히 도망친다. 이 날의 악연이 아들과 며느리에게까지 이어질 줄이야... 실존인물과 가상인물이 얽혀진다. 하나님의 불에 맞고도 살아난 루터는 술주정뱅이 남편으로부터 마르타 모자를 구해준다. 마르타는 루터가 폭풍을 일으킬 자임을 예감한다. 마르타의 아들 요나단은 루터의 추종자가 된다. 이제 스토리는 복잡해진다. 다시 가상인물이 등장한다. 가상인물은 16세기의 한 단면을 보여준다. 악명 높은 기사 토플러가 가난한 농부 토마스와 모이라 부녀의 농작물을 약탈한다. 농민들의 원성이 깊어만 간다. 농민전쟁의 먹구름이 드리워진다. 요나단이 스클라의 약혼녀 엘리자베트와 사랑에 빠진다. 스클라의 집요한 추격전이 숨막히게 전개된다. 요나단은 엘리자베트의 수호천사다. 스토리는 루터에게 옮겨간다. 1517년 10월 31 일 비텐베르크 대학 교수 루터(33세)는 면죄부 장사꾼 테첼과 토론하기 위해 95개 논제를 교회 문에 게시한다. 썩은 뿌리에 벼락이 떨어진다. 드디어 폭풍이 몰아닥쳤다. 이 날의 용기가 교회를 정화할 줄이야... 나머지는 당신 몫이다.

그 명성 그대로

구약의 내러티브 설교 - 청중을 사로잡는
스티븐 D. 매튜슨 지음, 이승진 옮김 / 기독교문서선교회(CLC) / 2004년 4월

  구약성경을 장르별로 구분해보면  이야기와 시로 나눌 수 있다. 율법서와 역사서와 예언서의 일부가 산문이고(3분의 2가량), 시가서와 지혜서와 예언서의 일부가 운문이다.(3분의 1가량)  이 책은 현대 문학 이론을 도입하여 구약 성경의 이야기를 분석한다. 저자는 여느 서사비평가처럼 이야기의 줄거리인 플롯(3장)과 이야기를 재미있게 만드는 등장 인물(4장)과 등장 인물의 활동 무대인 배경(5장)과 이야기의 마스터키(master key)인 내레이터의 관점(6장)을 통해 다양한 각도로 본문을 살펴본다.(서사비평에 대해 더 알기 원하는 독자는 [이야기 마가]를 보라.) 여기에서 멈추지 않는다.

  저자는 설교학자답게 해돈 로빈슨의 [강해설교(Biblical Preaching, 2nd ed. 아직 출판되지 않았다.)]를 발전시켜 본문의 중심사상(big idea)을 추적한다. 성경 저자의 의도를 파악하여(주해적인 아이디어) 하나님의 모든 백성들에게 연결하고(신학적인 아이디어) 오늘의 청중들에게 구체적으로 적용한다.(설교적인 아이디어)  중심사상이란 화살을 설교의 목적이란 과녁에 맞추는 효과적인 방법(10장)도 제시한다. 여기에서 만족하지 않는다.

  설교자를 위해 해돈 로빈슨의 [성경적인 설교]처럼 설교의 실제를 보여준다. 설교자와 설교를 간단하게 소개하고, 설교를 제시하고, 설교를 분석하고, 설교자와 유익한 대담을 가진다. 모두 원고없이 설교한다니 놀랍기만 하다. 이뿐 아니다. 저자는 구약 성경의 이야기 본문을 해석하기 위한 표준적인 참고도서(134-136쪽)와 주석(부록 B)도 소개한다. 이야기꾼이 갖추어야 할 자질들(13장)은 가장 인상적이다. 성경의 이야기를 흥미진진하게 이끌어 가는 비법이 실려있기 때문이다. 당신도 어서 읽어보고 스토리텔러가 되어보라.
